The First Week of Business

Rocky Pollington Other Leave a Comment

We opened our doors a week ago today and it’s been crazy...

Our week started with fill out all the administrative legalese associated with starting a new business, open bank accounts, sign documents and make sure all our ducks were in order. It was a straight forward process and thankfully all over.

Thankfully we met most of our goals aside from some minor setbacks. Nothing of which we weren't prepared for. Here's a few of the things we wanted to accomplish this week...

  • Finish legal admin documents
  • Create initial content calander
  • Connect with potential clients
  • Finalize services webpage content
  • Forgot to buy a garbage can (oops)

Communications

Starting on Tuesday Mike Meeker (our communications director) has been conducting our initial community outreach by contacting local businesses and letting them know we exist. He’s also scheduled meetings with the local business groups including the Cadillac Chamber of Commerce, Small Business Association of Michigan, and more. It’s important to network with other local business in your area to grow your awareness.

Mike has also started setting up a system to quickly and effectively qualify new leads to make sure our services are right for them. One of our core pillars of success is dedication to make sure every client ultimately benefits, it’s just good business.

Operations

Rob Sapp, our operations director, has been getting us some great content to use for our webpage and social channels (we had a great photoshoot). He has been getting in touch with his network to find us leads and discover new ways to reach new customers. When starting a new business, your friends and prior contacts can really help amplify your voice.

Custom 404 video

Rob made an amazing custom 404 page!

Moreover, Rob has been making sure our system for handling client workflow and internal scheduling is setup and works as intended. We intend to scale UglyBadger to handle many clients, so, in order to maintain our high standard of quality these tools and workflows are important.

Marketing

While I wished to finish the team section of the website, fate had other plans…

messy office

Although Mike and Rob have been working diligently, I have been dealing with an issue I wasn’t expecting to crop up this week. My workstation had a malfunctional radiator pump the second day we opened, hindering a lot of my work.

I did manage to finalize a lot of our initial local SEO plans. Including getting all our local citations, getting indexed on Google, Bing, Facebook, and Apple (you can find us on maps). Aside from that I began building our foundational social channels and prepping our content calendar.

What's in store for week two?

This week we have a few goals we wish to get completed:

  • Complete foundational website pages.
  • Meet with potential clients and go over goals and projects.
  • Get community feedback
  • publish 2 blog posts

We have high expectations for ourselves and confidence in our abilities. We started this business as a way to help throw Northern Michigan into the new digital era. There are too many local businesses who don't understand the true value an online presence can bring and it's our mission to help guide the way.

So how did we do? Leave a Comment!

We read all our social media and website comments so let us hear your thoughts on our first week. Any veteran business owners have some tips for us?

Don't make us beg...

Marketing Director

Everyone at the UB office knows that Rocky has the most certifications (he makes sure to remind us).

But rocky is a serious workaholic.

He wakes up at 4 AM every morning to get his dose of caffeine and to catch up on the latest digital trends
before he sits on YouTube to laugh at dogs falling down.

P.S. He thinks his jokes are funny and we keep letting him think they are.

We’ve had a chaotic first week here at UglyBadger Media, but everything is going to plan. From delightful surprises to dreadful disaster one thing is for sure, it wasn’t boring…
